Each year, the Office of Research manages funding opportunities that limit the number of Appalachian's submissions. Below is a list of known competitions and programs competing during the fall 2023 semester. Please note that some competitions listed have already opened their application portals.

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Innovation Partnerships Program
- Description: To support events which involve participants from more than one ORAU institution. Applications must be focused on one or more of the FY 2024 ORAU core focus areas:
- Climate and Environment
- Health Equity
- Future of the STEM Workforce

NC Library Services & Technology Act (LSTA) Project & EZ Grants
- Description: Libraries are invited to apply for funding that supports a new or improved program or service that will solve a specific problem or meet an identified need of the library’s current or potential users.
- Slots Available: University library may submit up to 3 apps per year
- Internal Deadline: Call for interest anticipated mid September
- Sponsor Deadline: LOI: Typically early November
ORAU Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards
- Description: To provide seed money for research by junior faculty at ORAU member institutions. These awards are intended to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty and result in new funding opportunities. Technical areas supported include:
- Engineering and Applied Science
- Life Sciences
- Mathematics/Computer Sciences
- Physical Sciences
- Policy, Management, or Education

National Science Foundation (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation
- Description: Serves to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation for research and research training. An MRI award supports the acquisition or development of a multi-user research instrument that is, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs.
