American Lung Association COVID-19 and Emerging

Respiratory Viruses Research Award

Summary: 

The American Lung Association has announced an RFP for research directly related to COVID-19 that addresses the following types of clinical, basic, translational, and population health questions: a new understanding of the basic biology of respiratory viruses that could lead to better treatment and prevention; development of novel therapeutics and vaccines; understanding host factors that alter response to these infections; understanding individual, regional, or social factors increasing or decreasing community spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses; and case tracking and epidemiological approaches.

Exceptional Flash Call for Proposals: Mitigating risk in the wake of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Summary: 

The AXA Research Fund's program aims to fund projects in the following areas: protecting vulnerable populations from epidemics and catastrophes; improving data collection and quality in health; understanding the effects of confinement and social distancing; early warning and preparedness; preserving the environment and our health; and learnings from COVID-19 for mitigating future related crises in climate and biodiversity. Preference will be given to projects with a local focus and potential applicability on a global scale. Applicants should be six to ten years from the awarding of their doctorate.

COVID-19 Competitive Grant Program

Summary: 

Provides financial support for organizations producing independent educational programs and quality improvement initiatives designed to combat the COVID-19 crisis. IHEs and health-care providers are welcome to apply. The first track supports educational programs for healthcare providers focused on the recognition, diagnosis, treatment, and overall care management of patients with COVID-19, while the second track provides support to healthcare systems so that they may evaluate and improve their systems-of-care for COVID-19 patients. Funds can be used for staff training or clinical process improvement.

Summary: 

The Spencer Foundation's support education research projects that will contribute to understanding the rapid shifts in education in this time of crisis and change. Spencer is interested in supporting studies that aim to understand and disrupt the reproduction and deepening of educational inequality caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Spencer also recognizes that in times of great disruption and change, there may be opportunities to remake and imagine anew forms of equitable education. Thus, Spencer is also interested in research projects that are working to reimagine educational opportunities in these times.

Summary: 

The Stevens Initiative is providing resources to help education, exchange, and non-profit organizations in the United States and the Middle East and North Africa conduct virtual exchange programs to engage young people and educators affected by the pandemic. The Initiative views virtual exchange as programs that: use online technology to connect individuals and small groups between countries; are based on a curriculum or activity plan; involve qualified facilitators (such as educators or others); and involve sustained communication and collaboration synchronously (in real-time) or asynchronously over a period of time. The Initiative encourages proposals by consortia that include organizations with relevant and complementary experience, capacities, and networks

The Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award Special Cycle Funding Announcement—Supporting Engagement in and Dissemination of PCOR/CER in the Context of COVID-19

Summary: 

Supports projects that encourage active integration of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other healthcare stakeholders as integral members of the patient-centered outcomes research/comparative clinical effectiveness research (PCOR/CER) enterprise, aiming to help communities increase their capacity to participate across all phases of the PCOR/CER process while responding to contextual changes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is an opportunity to explore virtual/distanced methods of engagement and generate new questions and evidence needs across stakeholder groups.

  • The PCORI COVID-19 Targeted PFA is a new research funding announcement with an accelerated timeline to support innovative, high-impact studies that fit clearly within PCORI's core mission of patient-engaged and patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research. It will open for applications on Tuesday, May 5, 2020.

  • Rockefeller Foundation has announced a commitment of $30 million in support of COVID-related programs worldwide.


    RESEARCH DEVELOPMENTS & RELATED ARTICLES

  • NASEM Forum on Postsecondary Response to COVID-19 past sessions are now available to watch.

  • To streamline coronavirus vaccine and drug efforts, NIH and firms join forces: National Institutes of Health (NIH) and major drug companies announced a plan to stage carefully designed clinical trials of the drugs and vaccines they have decided are the highest priorities for testing and development as a way to reduce duplicative efforts.

  • Nominations are open for individuals or teams for the 2020 Golden Goose COVID-19 Recognition. Nominations should be submitted by May 22. 

  • Watch the EdTalk,  “How a Global Pandemic is Transforming Higher Education” presented by Renee Patton, Global Education & Healthcare Director at Cisco® with host Karl Horvath, Ph.D at Chief Information Officer at La Salle University.
