The UNC Research Opportunities Initiative (ROI; roi.northcarolina.edu) program provides targeted funding for innovative and potentially game-changing research initiatives.The 2024 round of awards will focus on institutional block grants to fund initiatives designed to increase research capacity in one of the eligible research areas. Funded by a recurring annual appropriation from the North Carolina General Assembly, the ROI represents a significant financial investment in the UNC System’s strategic goals.
Priority research areas eligible for ROI funding include advanced manufacturing; marine and coastal science; defense, military, and security; pharmacoengineering; energy; and data science. ROI awards demonstrate North Carolina’s growing appreciation of the role that university research can play in supporting economic development across our state.
LIMITED SUBMISSION: For the 2024 Award cycle, UNC System Institutions may only submit one proposal each and must have the support from the Vice Provost for Research and the Provost.
Competition Calendar:
- 12 pm, November 17, 2022: internal competition applications due
- 12 pm, December 1, 2022: internal faculty reviews complete
- 5 pm, December 6, 2022: all applicants notified of status
- 5 pm, December 8, 2022: selected applicant confirms intent to apply
- Prior to Winter Break 2022, selected applicant meets with VPR and Sponsored Programs Staff
- 5 pm, February 15, 2023: near-final application materials due in Cayuse for routing & review
- 5 pm, March 8, 2023: application materials due to UNC System Office
