The National Humanities Center's Being Human Festival - Request for proposals

Appalachian State is excited to be a sponsor of the National Humanities Center for 2023-24. This sponsorship periodically provides opportunties for App State humanities scholars, such as the following invitation to submit a proposal for the Being Human Festival. Please contact grs@appstate.edu for more information and to receive future announcements about National Humanities Center opportunities.

In April 2024 the National Humanities Center (NHC) has been invited to present Being Human, its inaugural National Humanities Festival (a sister festival to the Being Human festivals in the UK and Australia.)

In its first year, NHC's festival will feature 12 to 15 events, staged for general audiences, in communities across the country. The goal of the Festival is to create and promote impactful experiences in the humanities for diverse audiences across geographic regions.

Appalachian State university, as one of the NHC's institutional sponsors, has been invited to submit a proposal for such an event to be included in the 2024 festival.  Successful proposals will receive grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 from the National Humanities Center to help defray costs for their events. Events must be grounded in solid research methods but designed to engage the general public. As such, traditional academic formats, such as lectures, panels and symposia, will not be eligible for inclusion in the Festival. We are instead encouraging proposals for events such as walking tours, opportunities to learn a craft, historical re-enactments, communal storytelling ventures, performances, interactive exhibits, and other creative, educational options.

Please visit the Festival website to learn more and to submit your proposal for an event as part of "Being Human." You may also contact Jacqueline Kellish, NHC Director of Public Engagement, with specific inquiries. (jkellish@nationalhumanitiescenter.org) All applications must be received by September 15, 2023.
