Office of Research and Innovation March Workshops: Cayuse Intro.; CoPIs, Vendors, and Consultants; Open Science Movement; NSF Growing Convergence Research; Cayuse Routing

The Office of Research and Innovation is offering the following workshops in March. Please register at the links below.

Cayuse Introduction

Monday, March 4, 3-4 p.m. (Virtual)

In this workshop, users will be navigated through a 30,000-foot overview of Cayuse, the University's new official repository for all sponsored projects. Key features to be reviewed will include the SP Proposal module, Projects vs. Proposals, Approvals & Tasks, Status Categories, Roles for Viewers/Approvers, and how to conduct various searches.

CoPIs, Contractors (Vendors), and Consultants

Tuesday, March 19, 2-3 p.m. (Virtual)

Before entering into a relationship with another entity or even preparing a sponsored project budget in which another party will provide goods, services, or substantive programmatic work, the nature of the legal relationship must be determined. This is a significant decision because it determines the allocation of responsibilities and influences the appropriate application of indirect costs (IDC), sometimes referred to as F&A costs. This workshop will delve into examples, and checklists for how to identify an entity as 1) a subaward when working with other Co-PI's, 2) a subcontractor (or vendor,) or 3) a consultant.  Register today to learn how these entities relate to your budget and how you successfully manage each after receiving an award.

The Open Science Movement

Two sessions offered:
Tuesday, March 19, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
and Wednesday, March 20, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
(Virtual)

Over the past 10-15 years, many scientific disciplines have been reflecting on their practice of science, including issues like transparency in research. As a result, the Open Science Movement was born in an effort to promote replication and transparency in research across disciplines. This workshop will provide an overview of the foundations of open science and the importance behind its practice.

  • Understand what led to the replication crisis

  • Understand how Open Science combats these issues

  • Be familiar with the Open Science Framework, which is a resource available to all scientists to make their research data and materials accessible to the scientific community

Information Session: NSF Growing Convergence Research Program

Friday, March 22, 10-11 a.m. (Virtual)

Appalachian State University's Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) and the Research Institute for Environment, Energy, and Economics (RIEEE) are hosting a virtual information and brainstorming session about the NSF Growing Convergence Research Program

Convergence research is a means for solving vexing research problems, in particular, complex problems focusing on societal needs or deep scientific challenges. It entails integrating knowledge, methods, and expertise from different disciplines and developing novel paradigms that catalyze scientific discovery and innovation.

GCR identifies Convergence Research as having two primary characteristics:

  • Research driven by a specific and compelling problem. Convergence research is generally inspired by the need to address a specific challenge or opportunity, whether it arises from deep scientific questions or pressing societal needs.
  • Deep integration across disciplines. As experts from different disciplines pursue common research challenges, their knowledge, theories, methods, data, research communities and languages become increasingly intermingled or integrated. New frameworks, paradigms or even disciplines can form sustained interactions across multiple communities.
ORI and RIEEE's session will provide a very brief overview of the program and facilitate discussions with researchers with interest in pursuing this funding opportunity.

Cayuse Routing for PIs

Thursday, March 28, 1-2 p.m. (Virtual)

Want to go through a step-by-step instructional guide on how to create and submit a proposal for internal approval in Cayuse? This workshop will equip the user with increased knowledge of becoming familiar with the Cayuse platform by creating a proposal from scratch and identifying the various modules within the proposal record that need to be completed in order to route for approval review.
