The Office of Researchprovides support for the research, creative, and scholarly endeavors of Appalachian faculty, staff, and students. The Office of Research is comprised of four units: Sponsored Programs,Research Design & Analysis, Research Protections, and Grants Resources & Services

Overview of August

Thurs 8/13 - We held our New Faculty Virtual Orientation to the Office of Research. If you missed it, you can view the recording here:New Research Faculty Virtual Orientation.

Tues 8/25 - The Office of Research hosted its first virtual research forum on the topic of the scholarship of diversity, equity & inclusion. This will be a virtual series where faculty can come together and share research on the same topic(s). You can review the recording here: Virtual Research Forum - Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion 


Upcoming September Events and Workshops

Tues 9/1 and Wed 9/2 - Step One: Developing Your Research Question and Choosing a Design: This workshop has been designed to foster an appreciation and understanding of the science of question-asking, research independence, and best practices when designing research projects. By the end of this workshop, you should be able to: 1) Develop and operationalize research questions; 2) Consider the following concepts when designing your own study: causality, setting and validity, types of research control, measurement choices; and 3) Weigh the pros and cons of different types of research designs. Thurs 9/10- Developing your Research Agenda virtual workshop: This brief workshop will serve as an introduction to developing a new research agenda for both new and seasoned faculty members. During this session, we will define "the research agenda" and discuss why it is important and various ways to establish and implement it successfully.  You can register here.

 Mon 9/14 - Fri 9/18 - Research and Creative Activity at APPalachian (RECAPP) Virtual Celebration: This event celebrates all research, scholarship, and creative endeavors - funded and unfunded - of Appalachian Faculty and Staff. The event will be comprised of virtual sessions - faculty and staff will present digital posters, oral presentations, art, and/or performances - held synchronously and asynchronously throughout the week, culminating in a live zoom-cast awards ceremony for the Chancellor's and Provost's Awards for Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity. Wed 9/23- Grant Proposal Writing Overview virtual workshop:This workshop will provide an overview of writing a grant proposal, including the essential components required in most grant proposals. We will go over what makes an effective proposal, the abstract, the project description, defining the problem, identifying goals and objectives, and basic budget components. We will also identify common grant proposal writing mistakes and pitfalls. You can register here.

Thurs 10/1-The Scholarship for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (SDEI) Grantapplications due. Guidelines and eligibility information are embedded in the online application.

Tues 10/20- URC Grant submissions due. Guidelines and eligibility information are embedded in the online application.
